RESEARCH FOCUS Inflammation, autoimmunity and cancer

PI: Susanne Sattler

Focus: Research in the Cardiac Immunobiology group focusses on the cellular and molecular interplay between the immune and cardiovascular system. Our research investigates the role of the immune system in maintaining heart health and the acute and chronic immune response following injury to the heart, such as after a heart attack or myocarditis. Our goal is to target the immune system for new therapeutic options in cardiology, e.g. to better predict, treat and possibly prevent the development of heart failure

Network: Our group is located at the Division of Pharmacology of the Otto Loewi Research Center and the Division of Cardiology. Our interdisciplinary research relies on close collaborations with local Medical University Graz research teams and national and international collaboration partners. International collaborations with ongoing joint projects exist with the Jackson Laboratories, US, and Imperial College London, UK.

Projects

Antigen presentation and immunopathology in heart failure

  • The immune response to cardiac tissue damage is a key factor in the functional deterioration following myocardial infarction. Activation of antigen-specific T cells can lead to autoimmunity and persistent damage to the heart. In this project, we aim to investigate the immunological signaling pathway of antigen presentation, which is responsible for the initial induction of self-reactive T cells. The role of this process in the development of autoimmunity against the heart is not yet well understood.
  • Project duration: 2023-2027
