Tenure track professorships: A big boost for science

Are you one of the best (junior) researchers in the world and want to raise the level of basic and clinical research with your pioneering achievements? The best (junior) researchers from around the world who hold their own in the selection procedure have a unique opportunity as tenure track professors at Med Uni Graz: they can establish a working group in their field of research in the state-of-the-art, point-of-care environment of Medical Science City Graz and share their special expertise with the international research community over the course of a long-term scientific career. The position is initially limited to six years, during which the goals of the qualification agreement must be met. If the candidate demonstrates outstanding and remarkable achievements, an evaluation of the qualification agreement may be possible sooner. When the defined goals have been achieved, an unlimited term contract as an associate professor is concluded, which entails belonging to the professorial curia as well as taking on responsibility for one's own field of research. The Department of Urology is looking for a

Tenure Track Professor of Translational Uro-oncology

We are looking for an excellent researcher with great potential to develop an internationally recognized research agenda in the field of translational research in uro-oncology. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research and teaching in the fields of experimental cancer research in urology with a focus on personalized medicine in bladder cancer and immuno-oncology. The new position will complement the research activities of the already existing research areas, such as clinical trials, outcome and health services research, and focus on basic research and translational approaches. The initial appointment is limited to six years. After the conclusion of a qualification agreement, the career advancement goal is to transfer to a tenured position as an associate professor (tenure track professor pursuant to § 99 para. 5 and 6 of the Universities Act). If the candidate demonstrates outstanding and remarkable achievements, the qualification agreement may be fulfilled more quickly.


Core duties and responsibilities:

  • Establishing a research group to advance basic and/or translational uro-oncology
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, supervising diploma and PhD students, and mentoring and promoting young researchers
  • Designing, acquiring, implementing, and managing funded research projects
  • Cooperating on research that exploits the existing strengths of the department and other disciplines at the Medical University of Graz
  • Writing and publishing high-quality scientific papers in reputable journals
  • Establishing and maintaining networks through local, national, and international research collaborations
  • Organizing and participating in conferences in the academic field
  • Supporting scientific and public outreach in the research area (public lectures, media, etc.)


Successful candidates must have the following qualifications:

  • PhD degree in a relevant scientific field (pharmacy, molecular oncology, biochemistry, biomedicine, or similar)
  • Profound research expertise in the field of bladder cancer
  • Proven track record of high-quality publications and peer-reviewed research grants or other third-party funding as a lead or principal investigator
  • Previous experience in teaching and/or (co)supervising pre- and postgraduate students (depending on the applicant’s career stage)
  • Postdoctoral research fellowship abroad or at a different institution than where the PhD was completed
  • Experience in cutting-edge technologies, e.g. omics-technologies, cell culture and animal models
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English documented by fulfilling the PhD-thesis in English

  • Experience in setting up and leading a laboratory research group
  • International collaborations
  • Willingness to learn German
  • Interdisciplinary and interprofessional cooperation
  • Ability to work in teams and ability to inspire colleagues and students
  • Responsible work habits, resilience, and ability to solve problems
  • Good communicative and social skills
