Prof. Beutler, MD, is Regental Professor and Director of the Center for Genetics of Host Defense at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He discovered an important family of receptors that allow mammals to sense infections, triggering a powerful inflammatory response. For this work he has received numerous awards, including the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. His research is considered a revolution in our understanding of the human immune system and is crucial for the development of new therapies to fight infections, autoimmune diseases, and cancer.
